The two popular

pronunciations for Watchemoket Square are:

"watch-a-moe-cut"

"watch-moe-ket"

For the past eleven years, the East Providence Area Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Annual Watchemoket Square Day event with local businesses and organizations. The event was created to bring awareness to this waterfront area's past, present and future.

In January 15, 2020, (before the pandemic) a community workshop was hosted by the City of East Providence and held at Tockwotton on the Waterfront. The workshop featured guest speakers and an opportunity for the public to provide comments and ideas for the Watchemoket Square area.

Thanks to Dr. David Weed and Sowams Heritage Area Project, there is a 90-minute video and photo highlights from the 2020 community meeting.

That workshop and interviews with local representatives from the community resulted in a comprehensive report that was discussed at a new, virtual community workshop on Feb 17, 2021.

Watchemoket Square Day is a celebration of the past, present and future of Watchemoket Square in the City of East Providence, Rhode Island.

During the late 1800's and early 1900's, the area was the center of the East Providence business community with over 100 businesses and hotels. It is now experiencing renewed interest and development of its buildings, waterfront and landscape.
